Solar Panel Integration Enhances Sustainability in PLA Production at TotalEnergies Corbion Plant

In a significant step towards enhancing sustainability in the production of bioplastics, the TotalEnergies Corbion facility in Rayong has embraced renewable energy through the implementation of a comprehensive Solar Rooftop, Carport, and Cover Way initiative. This program not only showcases the company’s commitment to innovative and sustainable production methods but also aligns with the broader objective of promoting responsible consumption and production as emphasized by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.

The pioneering project, undertaken in collaboration with TotalEnergies Eneos, has been established within the Asia Industrial Estate under the facilitation of B.Grimm, the utility provider. Spanning a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), the project boasts a capacity of 1,251 kWp. It is anticipated to generate approximately 1.6 GWh annually, contributing significantly to the reduction of carbon emissions by avoiding the release of 823 tonnes of CO2 every year.

Olivier de Linares, Plant Director at TotalEnergies Corbion, expressed pride in the project’s successful integration, stating, “The installation of solar panels at our Rayong plant marks a significant milestone in our sustainability journey. We are proud to leverage renewable energy sources and innovative technologies to drive sustainable production practices while ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees.” He further highlighted the collaborative effort between TotalEnergies Corbion shareholders, Corbion’s premises, and the access to leading solar panel solutions provided by TotalEnergies Eneos.

A noteworthy achievement of this project was its adherence to exemplary safety standards, particularly during construction, which was completed on time and without any accidents. This success was attributed to TotalEnergies Eneos, who enforced their top safety protocols, especially regarding work at height.

The successful integration of solar energy into the plant’s energy mix represents TotalEnergies Corbion’s relentless pursuit of reducing its environmental footprint and advancing its sustainability credentials. The Rayong plant, which operates on a full industrial scale, not only exemplifies the tangible impact of biopolymers on sustainability but also illustrates the company’s continuous efforts to optimize efficiency and sustainability in its operations.

The facility’s employment of over 100 individuals further signifies TotalEnergies Corbion’s commitment to creating job opportunities and bolstering local communities. The utilization of PLA bioplastics directly supports the principles of SDG 12 by promoting more sustainable consumption and production patterns, thereby contributing to a reduction in environmental impact and facilitating a shift towards a more circular and sustainable economy.

In conclusion, the initiative to integrate solar panels at the Rayong plant underscores TotalEnergies Corbion’s dedication to environmental stewardship and responsible business practices. It stands as a testament to the company’s unwavering commitment to seeking out and implementing sustainable solutions in the bioplastics industry, marking a significant step forward in their sustainability journey.
