Revitalizing Jerome: Transforming a Historic Town into a Future Commercial Hub

Share

Welcome to a vibrant resurgence happening in the heart of Jerome, a town with a rich history and a bright future. Jerome, once a bustling hub on Main Street in 1964, experienced a period of decline when interstate developments and changes in shopping habits led people away from its downtown. However, today, thanks to the determination and investment of new business owners and the community, downtown Jerome is being revitalized.

As we’ve engaged with the community through open houses for our Strategic and Comprehensive Plans, a consistent vision has emerged: Jerome’s residents long for a lively downtown area where they can dine, shop, and enjoy the beauty of the city with friends and family. People from all walks of life in our community share this dream of a bustling, vibrant downtown, a place that holds a unique and irreplaceable spot in our hearts.

The city is committed to bringing this vision to life, starting with essential streetscape improvements. The Jerome Urban Renewal Agency, supported by grant funding, is spearheading the initiative to transform downtown into an attractive, pedestrian-friendly area ripe for reinvestment. Phase 1 of these downtown improvements is set to commence this summer, featuring enhancements such as new curbs, sidewalks with inlaid brick, plus the addition of trees and flower planters. These changes are not just cosmetic: they aim to slow traffic naturally and encourage people to stroll, browse, and enjoy what downtown Jerome has to offer.

In alignment with this vision, we’ve embarked on efforts to recognize and celebrate the investments of individuals and businesses contributing to the revitalization of downtown. The Mayor’s Pride in Property Award acknowledges those who have shown exceptional commitment to enhancing the commercial environment and community pride in Jerome. This initiative is a testament to our collective dedication to fostering a vibrant commercial center that reflects the spirit and aspirations of our community.

A significant development bolstering this renewal is the establishment of the new College of Southern Idaho, LeRoy Craig Jerome Center. Named in honor of a cherished supporter, this center will occupy a previously underutilized lot, promising not only to invigorate the area with activity but also to offer vital career development opportunities to residents.

Jerome’s downtown revitalization is a testament to the power of community vision and collaboration. The improvements underway and those planned for the future represent a critical lifeline for the downtown area. These efforts not only enhance the physical appearance of downtown but also rekindle the sense of community pride and belonging.

As we move forward, we invite everyone to experience the renewed spirit of downtown Jerome—to visit, support, and take pleasure in the enhanced streetscapes and burgeoning businesses. Jerome is not just undergoing a transformation; it is reasserting itself as a vibrant, inviting destination with a unique charm, eager to welcome locals and visitors alike.

Welcome to Jerome—a place where history meets opportunity, and community dreams turn into reality.
