The dream of high-speed rail travel between Las Vegas and Los Angeles is moving closer to reality, thanks to recent developments from Brightline West. In an exciting announcement made this May, the company revealed its partnership with Siemens to bring cutting-edge train sets to the forthcoming route, promising to redefine interstate travel for countless passengers.

Brightline West, a pioneer in U.S. rail infrastructure, has selected Siemens as the “preferred bidder” for manufacturing the train sets needed for the high-speed connection. This collaboration is set to introduce ten “American Pioneer 220” (AP 220) trainsets, which will undergo production, delivery to Nevada, and extensive testing before the anticipated launch of services in 2028.

After a comprehensive and competitive process involving several international contenders, Siemens emerged on top, fulfilling a range of criteria including competitive pricing, timely production schedules, and superior train performance. Criteria such as speed, travel duration, ADA compliance, and passenger comfort were paramount in the decision-making process. Moreover, the ability to integrate future with initiatives like the California High-Speed Rail project was a significant factor.

These state-of-the-art Siemens AP220 train sets represent the pinnacle of high-speed rail technology, designed with the American market in mind. Building upon the success of the Velaro platform, already proven in Europe, the AP220 promises an unparalleled passenger experience through innovative digital integrations and a groundbreaking propulsion system. Notably, this venture not only introduces advanced train technology to the U.S. but also encourages the development of a robust American supply chain for high-speed rail manufacturing—a move that positions the country to compete with long-established high-speed rail networks around the globe.

With plans to establish a new production facility specifically for the AP220, Siemens is on the brink of making history by manufacturing the first true high-speed train sets on American soil. These trains, destined to travel at speeds of up to 220 miles per hour, stand out for their efficient propulsion systems, lightweight construction, and aerodynamic efficiency. The AP220 trains, featuring an ultrawide carbody, are designed to enhance passenger comfort beyond current offerings while providing ample seating—between 434 to 450 passengers per seven-car train—and cutting travel times to under two hours.

The proposed route, stretching 218 miles along the median of the I-15, aims to seamlessly connect Las Vegas to Los Angeles. By bringing cities together that are too far to conveniently drive and too close to feasibly fly, Brightline West addresses a long-standing travel dilemma. The route will feature strategic stops in key locations including Las Vegas, Nevada, Victor Valley, Hesperia, and Rancho Cucamonga, California, ensuring wide accessibility and convenience for travelers.
