Metfone: A Benchmark for Việt Nam-Cambodia Economic Cooperation, Says President

During a significant state visit to Cambodia, President Tô Lâm highlighted Metfone, an affiliate of the Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group, as a shining example of the thriving economic cooperation between Việt Nam and Cambodia. This recognition came during his visit to the leading mobile operator in Cambodia, marking an impactful moment in his itinerary.

Metfone’s success over its 15-year journey in the Cambodian telecommunications market has not only been a tale of dynamic business operations but also of profound social engagement and contribution. President Lâm expressed admiration for the substantial strides Metfone has made, noting its pivotal role in winning the hearts of the Cambodian populace through its various social security endeavors across the country.

The President commended Metfone’s initiative in aligning closely with the Cambodian Government’s vision, especially in the universalization of telecommunications services and spearheading digital transformation efforts across government sectors. Metfone’s commitment to facilitating e-Government and supporting digital transformation in Cambodia has been instrumental, showcasing the potential for constructive foreign collaboration in national development projects.

Looking forward, President Tô Lâm expressed optimism for Metfone’s continued leadership in telecommunications, technology, and digital transformation within Cambodia. He underscored the importance of Metfone’s role in fostering a supportive environment for the Vietnamese business community in Cambodia, encouraging further collaboration and mutual growth.

Since Viettel’s entry into the Cambodian market in 2006 and the subsequent launch of Metfone in 2009, the company has grown to become one of the top five entities in Cambodia in terms of tax contribution, illustrating the economic impact of its operations. Furthermore, Metfone’s presence has been a boon for employment in the region, indirectly creating approximately 30,000 jobs and fostering economic stability.

The visit also provided a platform for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Vietnam Airlines and Cambodia Angkor Air. This agreement, aimed at strengthening and expanding bilateral cooperation, underscores the commitment to enhance aviation services on routes connecting Việt Nam and Cambodia. Additionally, a separate MoU involving Vietnam Airlines, Saigon Tourist Group, Cambodia Tourism Association (CATA), and Cambodia Angkor Air, was signed to promote tourism cooperation, showcasing a holistic approach to collaborative economic development between the two nations.

These initiatives reflect a broader strategy of utilizing collaborative ventures not only to bolster economic ties but also to enhance social welfare and digital infrastructure. Metfone’s exemplary role in this regard demonstrates the potential for corporate participation in national development, setting a standard for others to follow.
