Groundbreaking Compressed Biogas Project Launched in Karnal, Haryana
In an ambitious move towards sustainable energy solutions, a Compressed Biogas (CBG) / Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project has been successfully launched in Karnal, Haryana. This innovative venture is part of the Central Government’s Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative, aiming to revolutionize the transportation sector with eco-friendly alternatives.
The project, spearheaded by LR Energy, focuses on the conversion of waste materials from the sugar industry and agricultural residues into CBG. With the impressive capacity to produce 2,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of CBG and an additional 9,000 MTPA of Fertilizer Organic Manure (FOM), the initiative is a significant leap towards achieving numerous Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals include ensuring access to affordable and clean energy, promoting sustained economic growth and decent work for all, fostering innovation and infrastructure, and taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
GS Barara, the director and CEO of LR Energy, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the company’s commitment to sustainable energy. “This significant step towards sustainable energy underlines our commitment to aligning with national initiatives and fostering a cleaner, greener future for India. We’re not just investing in CBG; we’re investing in a sustainable and resilient future for our nation. Together, we power progress and sustainability,” he stated.
The inauguration of the CBG facility in Karnal marks a crucial milestone towards India’s goal of establishing a gas-based economy. Further expanding its vision for a greener future, LR Energy is planning to develop over 20 projects across North India. This ambitious expansion represents a cumulative investment of Rs 600 crore (approximately US$70 million), showcasing a significant commitment to renewable energy solutions.
To ensure the success and sustainability of the project, LR Energy has entered into strategic partnerships. The company has secured a 15-year commercial sales agreement with Indian Oil Corporation Limited. Additionally, a Tripartite Agreement has been signed with GAIL India and GAIL Gas Limited, cementing the collaborative efforts to promote CBG as a viable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional fuels.
This CBG project in Karnal not only signifies a major advancement in alternative fuels but also serves as a beacon of innovation and sustainability for the entire nation. By harnessing the potential of agricultural and industrial waste, the initiative opens new avenues for clean energy production, contributing positively to the environment and the economy.
