Fashion Week slated for June

The eagerly awaited Fashion Week event, postponed from its initial February schedule, is now set to dazzle fashion enthusiasts on June 1 at Cresta Lodge, Gaborone. Organized by Starlight Studio in collaboration with Duma FM and Fashion Design and Creative Arts, this event is hailed as ‘Fashion Week of All Nations, Afrique Collections.’

At the heart of this gathering is the commendable aim to spotlight the creativity and ingenuity of young designers from Botswana, providing them with an invaluable public platform for showcasing their fashion creations. Daisy Tlhaloganyang, the visionary behind this event, emphasized its pivotal role in fostering economic diversification and youth empowerment within the realms of fashion, culture, and clothing production in Botswana.

“Our primary mission with Fashion Week is to cultivate and showcase the immense talent and creativity within Botswana’s fashion sector, particularly among youth from TVET institutions and fashion design entrepreneurs. We’re setting the stage for a paradigm shift, aiming to transform the perception of fashion from a mere hobby to a key economic pillar. By flaunting the innovative designs and craftsmanship of our local talents, we wish to underline fashion’s significant contribution to our nation’s economy,” explained Tlhaloganyang.

She further elaborated on the event’s broader cultural ambitions. “Fashion Week is not just about clothing; it’s a celebration of arts, culture, and design. We’re looking forward to presentations that blend traditional attire, such as makgabe, tshega, phaeyana, with pieces inspired by African countries or cultures. This fusion of tradition and innovation will showcase the vast richness and diversity of African fashion,” Tlhaloganyang added.

Tlhaloganyang also outlined the event’s intent to extend its reach beyond Botswana’s borders, providing a unique venue for young designers and models to shine. By including international judges from South Africa, the event aims to offer local talents exposure to global fashion trends and valuable networking opportunities.

The Fashion Week of All Nations by Starlight Studio stands as a monumental celebration of creativity, a testament to the potential and dynamism of Botswana’s youth, and a beacon for the country’s burgeoning fashion industry. Through this event, Tlhaloganyang and her team aspire not only to change perceptions but to firmly position fashion and clothing manufacturing as vital components of Botswana’s economic framework.
