Himachal CM Urges Well-off Consumers to Voluntarily Give Up Electricity Subsidies
Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has taken a noteworthy step by voluntarily relinquishing the electricity subsidies on all five meters registered under his name. This act is not just a personal decision but a clarion call to well-off individuals in the state to do the same, thereby contributing to the greater good and development of Himachal Pradesh.
In a recent address to the media, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of affluent citizens with multiple electricity meters relinquishing their subsidies. This, he believes, will significantly support the ongoing development projects within the state. The Chief Minister outlined the process for waiving subsidies, encouraging consumers to use the online portal provided by the electricity board, contact helpline numbers, or visit their nearest electricity sub-division to complete the necessary steps.
The appeal comes after discussions among Cabinet members and Congress MLAs of the state, all of whom have agreed to give up their electricity subsidies. The government currently invests Rs. 2,200 crore annually on these subsidies, along with an additional Rs. 200 crore monthly on salaries and pensions for electricity board employees. The Chief Minister emphasized the necessity of directing these resources towards those who are truly in need, and appealed to wealthier individuals to assist in creating a more equitable society.
The vision set forth by the state government centers around achieving self-reliance for Himachal Pradesh, with concerted efforts aimed at reforming systems contributing to the state’s economic revival. The Chief Minister indicated that these initiatives are successfully mitigating investment outflows and are enhancing the economic growth trajectory of the region. He called upon the citizens of Himachal Pradesh to rally behind these initiatives, suggesting that joint efforts will lead to enhanced opportunities for the underprivileged while advancing the state’s progress.
This move by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is expected to inspire other state leaders and affluent members of society to reflect on their role in promoting sustainable development and supporting social equity in Himachal Pradesh.
