Margherita Inaugurates Training Programme for Artisans, Weavers in 100 Clusters
On a notable day for the crafts community, Pabitra Margherita, Union Minister of State for Textiles, launched a significant training initiative aimed at empowering artisans and weavers across India. The ‘Bunkar and Karigar Utthan Upskilling Programme for the fiscal year 2024-25’ marks a milestone effort to foster skill development and proficiency among the creative minds working in this sector.
The programme covers an ambitious spread of 100 clusters that stretches the length and breadth of the country, encapsulating the diverse tapestry of Indian craftsmanship from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, and the Northeast to Gujarat. In its first phase, the initiative is set to benefit over 3,500 artisans and weavers, providing them with an opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge in their respective crafts.
With a specific focus on both the handicrafts and the handloom sectors, the programme divides its attention between 70 clusters dedicated to handicrafts and 30 to handloom. This targeted approach aims to address the unique needs and challenges faced by artisans in these distinct areas.
“We have trained master trainers in all the clusters and they are confident that this training of 100 days will benefit the weavers and artisans. We intend to extend the programme to every nook and corner of the country,” stated Margherita, emphasizing the comprehensive and inclusive ambition of the initiative. Each participating cluster houses more than 30 artisans and weavers, all of whom show great enthusiasm for the programme. This eagerness is a testament to the perceived value of such an upskilling opportunity, as it promises to enhance their capacity in their respective fields.
Margherita, a dedicated Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, further highlighted the broader vision of the government to elevate the textile industry to new heights. The focus remains steadfast on handloom and handicrafts, areas rich with potential for growth and innovation. By facilitating specialized training programmes and creating market linkages, the initiative aims not only to enrich the skills of individual artisans and weavers but also to strengthen the infrastructure and dynamics of the entire sector.
The inauguration ceremony, held in Guwahati, served as a beacon of encouragement for the artisans and weavers of Assam, many of whom were present. Additionally, beneficiaries from other states were able to join virtually, ensuring a collective and inclusive kickoff to a programme that holds the promise of transformation and hope for India’s textile community.
This innovative training programme spearheaded by Pabitra Margherita stands as a clear indication of the government’s commitment to not only preserving but also promoting the rich heritage and skills of Indian artisans and weavers. As the ‘Bunkar and Karigar Utthan Upskilling Programme FY 2024-25’ unfolds, it is expected to usher in a new era of productivity, creativity, and sustainability within India’s treasured textile industry.
