China’s BYD Becomes First Automaker in the World to Deliver 10 Million NEVs

Chinese automaker BYD has reached a significant milestone by delivering its 10-millionth new-energy vehicle (NEV), marking a first in the global automotive industry. The company made the announcement on Monday during its 30th anniversary celebration in Shenzhen, South China’s Guangdong Province.

During the celebration event, BYD’s chairman Wang Chuanfu ceremoniously handed over the landmark 10-millionth NEV to Feng Ji, the producer behind the popular video game “Black Myth: Wukong.” This handover underscores BYD’s rise from a humble startup to a formidable force in the global automobile market.

Reflecting on the past three decades, Wang highlighted BYD’s evolution from a 20-person startup to a multinational corporation boasting nearly one million employees. This milestone not only cements BYD’s position as a leader in the NEV sector but also represents a significant achievement for China in transitioning from a major automobile consumer to a leading manufacturer.

BYD took 15 years to produce its first 5 million NEVs, yet achieved the next 5 million in just 15 months. This rapid growth is attributable to BYD’s unwavering commitment to innovation and its focus on new energy as a sustainable path forward.

The company’s swift ascent is indicative of China’s broader progress in the NEV industry. Recently, China’s NEV output for 2024 crossed the 10 million units mark, reaffirming its place as the first country to achieve this milestone within a single year.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China’s NEV production had already surpassed the full-year output of 9.59 million NEVs in 2023. The journey began in 2013 when China tracked NEV sales and output, producing 18,000 NEVs that year. By 2018, output reached 1 million, and by 2022, it exceeded 5 million units.

Experts project that China’s total NEV output will exceed 12 million units by the end of this year, as reported by industry sources. Alongside production, China’s NEV sales have continued to expand. In the first 10 months of 2024 alone, NEV sales reached 9.75 million units, a significant 33.9 percent increase year-on-year.

This historic achievement by BYD signifies not only a monumental leap for the company but also exemplifies China’s proactive approach in leading global automobile manufacturing with a focus on sustainable solutions.
