19 Biotech Startups and 5 Student Innovators Triumph at C-CAMP-BIRAC NBEC 2024
The seventh edition of the C-CAMP-BIRAC National Bio Entrepreneurship Competition unveiled its winners in 2024, spotlighting the ingenuity of 19 startups and five student teams. Supported by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, this esteemed competition serves as a cornerstone for science-based innovation, targeting pivotal issues in healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sectors.
In a noteworthy outcome, 10 of the startups were awarded funding between Rs 2-8 lakh from various sponsors, while 15 secured investment opportunities valued at $100,000 each. Collectively, the cash prizes and investment offerings exceeded Rs 15 crore in value, marking a significant boost for the winners. The student-led teams also celebrated their success, clinching Rs 10 lakh in cash prizes across different accolades during the grand finale.
Additionally, Biocombinator has pledged investments of up to Rs 4 crore for four chosen startups, with details on the beneficiaries to come. Beyond financial support, selected winners are poised to receive comprehensive mentorship from industry stalwarts, paving the way for advancements in their respective fields.
Priyank Kharge, Karnataka’s Minister for IT/BT and Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, highlighted the explosive growth potential within India’s biotech landscape. Citing the Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises (ABLE), he anticipated the sector’s value reaching 100 billion dollars in the coming decade. With Karnataka leading this charge, reporting a monumental leap in bioeconomy value from $21 billion to $31 billion between 2021 and 2023, the state sets a bullish trajectory for the entire sector.
The competition showcased solutions addressing a wide range of challenges, from cancer therapeutics and AI-powered analytics to sustainable biofuels and clean technologies. This diversity underscores the expansive impact biotech innovations can have across numerous domains.
Officials including Prashanth Prakash of the Karnataka’s Startup Vision Group and Accel Partners emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to amplify research and developmental outcomes. With an eye on future growth, the aspirations for the biotech ecosystem are set high, aiming for a tenfold improvement in innovation over the next five years.
The distinguished jury evaluated finalists based on innovation, scalability, and business viability, reflecting the rigorous standards of the competition. This process culminated in the selection of startups like Genoscope, OpenMed Lab, and BacAlt Biosciences among others, along with remarkable student teams from prestigious institutions such as BITS Pilani and IISc Bengaluru.
Dr. Taslimarif Saiyed, CEO and Director of C-CAMP, reiterated the uniqueness of the NBEC, highlighting its inclusive and sector-agnostic approach which has been instrumental in fostering a vibrant bioscience entrepreneurship environment across India.
Additionally, the launch of the Karnataka-Startup Advancement Programme (K-SAP) Phase 2 was announced during the event. This initiative aims to catapult Karnataka’s bio-startups onto the global stage, providing them with resources such as workshops, networking events, and access to international forums.
