Belfast International Airport Celebrates Passenger Growth
Belfast International Airport recently reported a notable increase in passenger numbers, indicating a robust recovery and positive trend in air travel. In the second quarter of 2024, the airport successfully served 1.8 million passengers, marking a significant growth of 4% compared to the pre-pandemic figures. This increase is particularly impressive when compared to the same period last year, showing an 8.3% rise, and a substantial leap from the first quarter of the year, which saw 1.3 million passengers.
The upswing in passenger numbers has been attributed to several strategic moves by the airport, including capacity expansion by its main airline partners, easyJet, Ryanair, and Jet2.com. These airlines have not only enhanced their service offerings but also introduced an array of new destinations, promoting travel diversity for passengers. Among the exciting new destinations slated for launch later in the year are Prague, Marrakech, Kaunas, and Madeira, broadening the airport’s reach and appeal.
In addition to the increase in passenger traffic, there has also been a significant rise in aircraft movements. From April to June 2024, Belfast International Airport witnessed 14,500 total aircraft movements, indicating an 8% increase compared to the previous year. This upsurge reflects the airport’s ongoing efforts to adapt and grow in a rapidly changing travel landscape.
Dan Owens, CEO of Belfast International Airport, shared his enthusiasm about the airport’s performance, stating, “These figures are extremely positive and clearly show an upward trend in Belfast International Airport’s strong recovery. We have had a busy year so far and continue to work with our airline partners to boost the range and frequency of destinations that will not only boost the local economy but provide further choice for local travellers.”
The airport is also in the midst of a significant £100 million investment plan aimed at enhancing its facilities and services. A major highlight of this plan is the new £25 million security building, set to open later in the summer, which is expected to further enhance the passenger experience and operational efficiency.
