Alpha Bank: 300 Million Euros to Metlen for the Construction of 5 Photovoltaic Parks in Romania

Alpha Bank has announced a significant financial commitment of 300 million euros toward the construction of five new photovoltaic parks in Romania. This ambitious project is slated for gradual completion by the second quarter of 2026, aligning with Metlen’s Asset Rotation Plan. The venture is a collaborative effort with two major Greek energy groups, marking a significant milestone in international energy investment.

Through this financing, Alpha Bank emphasizes its strategic focus on credit expansion beyond Greece’s borders and supporting Greek businesses’ international growth. With its extensive experience and expertise, the bank is uniquely positioned to advance in the power and utilities sector, particularly emphasizing green growth and energy transition investments. The bank leverages its specialists’ deep understanding to support such significant international projects, being notably the first Greek bank to adopt a wholesale banking structure in these sectors.

Within the last 18 months, the bank has allocated over 1.1 billion euros in green loans, half of which—550 million euros—have been directed towards Renewable Energy Sources (RES). This substantial Disbursement reflects the bank’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Yiannis Emiris, General Manager of Wholesale Banking, reiterated the bank’s dedication to sustainable development. Reflecting on the Metlen Energy & Metals project, he stated, “Supporting the construction of Metlen Energy & Metals’ new photovoltaic projects in Romania showcases Alpha Bank’s pivotal role not only as a financier but also as a strategic advisor for Greek companies pursuing innovative and bold projects abroad.”

Emiris further highlighted the bank’s pledge towards green development, stating, “Financing sustainability is a cornerstone of our strategy, aimed at tackling climate change and facilitating the transition to a zero-emission economy. We are firmly committed to expanding our initiatives in this area and are enhancing our goals for ‘green’ loans from an initial target of 3 billion euros to an ambitious 4.4 billion euros from 2024 to 2026.”

This initiative underscores Alpha Bank’s proactive approach in supporting environmental sustainability, positioning itself as a leader in green finance within the Greek banking sector. The financing of these Romanian photovoltaic parks not only represents a strategic expansion of Greek business interests abroad but also reflects the growing prioritization of sustainable energy practices across Europe.
