Two Major Projects for Larnaka, Pafos Airports’ Sustainable Development

Hermes Airports is steadfast in advancing its commitment to sustainable development through two significant initiatives that enhance its sustainability strategy. By leveraging innovative technologies and fostering international partnerships, the company aims to significantly diminish the environmental footprint of Larnaka and Pafos airports by embracing and implementing green practices.

In an important development on February 6, 2025, Hermes Airports received the green light from the European Union to embark on the installation of Electric Ground Power Units (EGPUs) at both of the island’s major international airports. This initiative is a component of the European funding programme dedicated to alternative fuel infrastructure, with Cyprus being among the 39 projects to gain approval.

This €3.6-million investment will be realized through the “Connecting Europe Facility” (CEF) alongside the specialized Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF). Specifically, the project aims to install 14 fixed and 17 mobile ground power units at Larnaka Airport, and 17 fixed along with 5 mobile units at Pafos Airport.

The introduction of this infrastructure means aircraft can receive electrical power while passengers await their upcoming flights, thereby eliminating the need to utilize their engines or diesel-powered ground units. This shift will lead to a substantial reduction in both noise pollution and carbon dioxide emissions, all while enhancing the energy efficiency of the airports.

Concurrently, Hermes Airports is actively participating in the European consortium known as TULIPS, with a focus on developing innovative technologies geared towards airport sustainability. A recent facet of this initiative saw Hermes upgrade the Health & Safety department offices by employing circular economy practices that involve reusing building materials.

The company is poised to integrate additional “green” technologies in the coming years, thereby reinforcing its environmental management and sustainable development policy. These strategic actions align with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to ensure that Cyprus’ two international airports continue to operate in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.

With these initiatives, Hermes Airports is not only steering towards a greener future but also setting a commendable example for sustainability within the aviation sector. The integration of electric ground power units and a focus on innovative sustainability practices highlight the ongoing shift towards eco-friendly operations at major transportation hubs.

These progressive projects underscore a future where airports are more attuned to their environmental impacts, minimizing their carbon footprints while optimizing efficiency. The advancements at Larnaka and Pafos airports exemplify a growing commitment to not only meet current environmental demands but also anticipate and plan for future challenges in sustainable aviation.

As Hermes Airports continues to roll out its progressive sustainability initiatives, its efforts mark a significant stride towards achieving extensive environmental benefits, illustrating the transformational potential of strategic planning and international collaboration within the realm of airport management and development.
