Defense Minister Commends National Council for Civil Society of Nigeria for Steering Clear of Hunger Protests

In a notable instance of governmental acknowledgment of civil society’s impact, the Minister of Defense recently lavished praise on the National Council for Civil Society of Nigeria. This commendation came during a dialogue in his Ship House office, where he met a delegation headed by Comrade Johnny Emmanuel. At this gathering, the importance of collaborative efforts between the government and civil society organizations (CSOs) in mitigating the country’s insecurity issues was a focal discussion point.

The Minister was effusive about the vital role CSOs play in establishing robust connections with local communities. He pointed out their indispensable contribution in sourcing valuable intelligence, mediating conflicts, and delivering humanitarian aid in regions plagued by strife.

In reassurance to the delegation, the Minister conveyed President Tinubu’s steadfast dedication to nurturing the economy via strategic economic policies. These initiatives, he reported, are beginning to bear fruit, as evidenced by the economic growth witnessed in the first quarter of 2024. This period marked the second-fastest Q1 growth rate seen in the previous six years, a testament to the government’s defense and economic strategies’ success in bolstering security and economic stability.

The Minister went on to enumerate several significant government initiatives aimed at furthering national development:

  • The Nigerian Student Loan Scheme, designed to broaden access to higher education.
  • Establishment of the Livestock Ministry to mitigate clashes between herders and farmers.
  • The introduction of the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF) to increase funding allocation for infrastructure projects.
  • Policy changes facilitating the sale of crude oil to indigenous refining companies in Naira.
  • Enactment of the National Minimum Wage Act.
  • Granting financial and operational autonomy to Local Governments to foster enhanced accountability and developmental effectiveness.
  • Advancements in irrigation through the construction of dams and channels.
  • Implementation of zero tariffs and duties on the importation of raw materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The Minister concluded his discourse with a message to the public, urging patience and highlighting the President’s resolution in introducing further innovative measures to stimulate the economy. Acknowledging that President Tinubu has only completed one year in office, he affirmed confidence in the government’s ongoing and future initiatives to yield positive outcomes.

Earlier in the meeting, Comrade Johnny Emmanuel, the National President of the National Council of Civil Society of Nigeria, extolled the Minister for his commendable service and dedication. Emmanuel reminisced about the Minister’s exemplary governance as a governor, citing his judicious resource management and his earned nickname “Calculator” for his meticulous budgeting and expenditure.

The event was punctuated by a significant moment when the Minister was honored with an award. This award was a token of appreciation for his unwavering commitment, patriotism, and integrity in service. Such gestures underscore the potential of productive collaboration between the government and civil society sectors in advancing national progress.
