Tech Chief’s Strategic Visit to Belgium and France to Foster Innovation Ties

In a significant move to bolster the city’s innovation and technology (I&T) framework, Secretary for Innovation, Technology & Industry (SITI), Prof Sun Dong, is set to venture to Belgium and France. This visit underscores an earnest effort to enhance collaborations and exchange in the sphere of technology and innovation between the city, the European Union, and France.

The highlight of Prof Sun’s journey is his participation in VivaTech 2024 in Paris. This event, acclaimed as Europe’s largest technology and startup festival, will take place from May 22 to 25, gathering the brightest minds in the tech industry from across the globe.

At VivaTech 2024, Prof Sun is not only representing the city but will also take center stage to deliver a keynote speech. His address at a seminar organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council shall shed light on how global startups can leverage Hong Kong’s dynamic innovation ecosystem to thrive in Asia. This is a pivotal moment that shines a spotlight on Hong Kong’s vital role in connecting Asian markets with the rest of the world.

Beyond the conference halls, Prof Sun is scheduled for a series of important engagements that will span across meeting with leading personalities in the I&T sectors of Belgium and France, to exploring tech enterprises. His agenda also includes visits to local research institutions and startup parks, aiming to draw insights and foster connections that could benefit the city’s I&T landscape.

The visit is not only a mission to strengthen ties but also a canvas for exploring new territories in technology and innovation. By engaging directly with European tech leaders and innovators, Prof Sun seeks to open new channels of cooperation and exchange that could propel the city’s I&T sectors to new heights.

Upon concluding his engagements in Europe, Prof Sun is slated to return to Hong Kong on May 26. During his absence, the city’s I&T leadership will continue without interruption. Under Secretary Lillian Cheong will serve as Acting Secretary from May 22 to 24 and on May 26. For the day in between, Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury Christopher Hui will hold the fort, concurrently assuming the SITI responsibilities on May 25.

This pivotal visit by Prof Sun Dong marks a significant stride towards fostering international collaboration in the realm of innovation and technology. Through such engagements, the city not only showcases its strengths and capabilities but also opens the door to nurturing a global ecosystem that champions technological advancement and innovation for all.
