Denmark’s Simonsen Orders Eight Chemical Tankers in China
In a move that significantly strengthens its position within the European chemical shipping sector, Danish shipping company Rederiet MH Simonsen has recently finalized a deal for the construction of eight stainless steel chemical tankers. This ambitious order has been placed with New Jiangzhou Shipbuilding, a Chinese shipyard with a history of resilience and transformation.
The vessels, each with a deadweight of 6,800 tons, are being designed with modern and environmentally friendly features at their core. Notably, they will be equipped with a methanol dual-fuel system, allowing for reduced emissions compared to traditional marine fuels. Additionally, an independent energy storage unit will be installed on each tanker, underscoring Simonsen’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in maritime operations.
Based in Svendborg, Rederiet MH Simonsen is a family-owned enterprise with a legacy that stretches back nearly a century. Currently, the company boasts ownership and operational responsibility for more than 10 tankers, which service the European market. Their fleet includes a range of sizes, from small 2,000 dwt vessels up to larger ones approaching 7,000 dwt.
This contract with New Jiangzhou Shipbuilding represents Simonsen’s inaugural venture into the Chinese newbuild market. While the financial specifics and the timetable for delivery remain under wraps, the order signals a significant step forward for both Simonsen and the Jiangxi-based shipyard. The latter, previously known as Jiangzhou Union Shipbuilding, has recently re-emerged as a noteworthy player in shipbuilding, particularly for European clients. Earlier, it secured contracts from Dutch company Mercurius Shipping for four chemical tankers and from German firm Candler Schiffahrt for six multipurpose vessels (MPPs), marking its energetic return to the international shipbuilding arena.
This development is a testament to the growing connections and business exchanges between the European maritime industry and Chinese shipbuilding facilities.
