Remembering James “Jimmy” Logan Chitwood, Jr.: A Pulaski Icon

James “Jimmy” Logan Chitwood, Jr., a much-beloved figure in Pulaski, Virginia, passed away at the age of 69 on February 10, 2024, in the comforting environment of Carrington Place, Daleville. His life journey came to a peaceful close, leaving behind a legacy marked by devotion, community service, and unwavering friendship.

Born on October 12, 1954, to Dr. James Logan Chitwood and Bonnie Jean Painter Chitwood, Jimmy embodied the spirit of Pulaski from the very beginning. He proudly graduated from Pulaski High School in 1973, setting the stage for a lifelong dedication to education and community development. His academic pursuits took him to Randolph-Macon College and Ferrum College, where he showcased his athletic skills on the tennis court and concluded with an associate’s degree in 1976. Jimmy’s scholarly journey culminated at Emory and Henry College, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in History in 1978.

Returning to the New River Valley was a choice that spoke to Jimmy’s dedication to his roots. He joined his father in managing farmland in Wythe County, particularly the Major Graham Farm—a place that not only served as his home for several years but also a hub of joy and camaraderie for friends and visitors alike. Even after moving on from the Major Graham Farm, Jimmy’s passion for the land persisted through his work with Dr. James Hylton, further solidifying his connection to the area’s agricultural community.

His career trajectory took a turn when health issues led him to real estate, where he spent 18 fruitful years with Century 21 Hometown Realty. However, Jimmy’s true calling was in service to others, as seen in his later work in caregiving and his invaluable contributions to Martin’s Pharmacy. Through these roles, he not only provided essential services but also brightened the days of many Pulaski residents with his infectious smile.

Jimmy’s involvement with the Pulaski Elks Lodge #1067 was a significant aspect of his life. Following in his father’s footsteps, he joined in September 1993 and became an integral figure within the organization. His dedication saw him serving 12 terms as Exalted Ruler, along with other notable roles that significantly impacted the community, especially through youth programs like the Hoop Shoot Competition.

His commitment to Pulaski extended to the arts, where he supported the Pulaski Theatre as a board member, playing a pivotal role in revitalizing this cultural landmark. His efforts contributed to bringing joy and entertainment to the people of Pulaski.

Jimmy leaves behind a loving family: his daughter Elizabeth Logan Chitwood, son-in-law Patrick “Rick” Newlun, sister Pam Chitwood Moore, brother-in-law Gene Moore, and niece Maia Logan Moore, among others. His legacy is also cherished by a wide circle of friends from various stages of his life, whose lives he touched profoundly.

A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held at the Pulaski Theatre on March 9, 2024, at 2 pm, followed by a reception at the Pulaski Elks Lodge. This gathering will be an opportunity for friends, family, and the many lives he touched to come together in remembrance of a truly remarkable man.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Elks National Foundation Scholarship Fund, a cause close to Jimmy’s heart, reflecting his enduring commitment to empowering the youth of his community.

Jimmy Chitwood’s legacy in Pulaski and beyond is a testament to the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. His spirit of generosity, service, and camaraderie will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.
